When things change

New LA office

Gets USLAX1-LT-01 and so on. Nothing existing changes.

Second SF-area office

Gets USOAK2-LT-01. The Alameda office stays OAK1.

A laptop dies

USHOU1-LT-01 dies. The replacement is USHOU1-LT-03. The job name ushou1-print moves to it in Tailscale, so every PC keeps printing. The old name stays retired.

Trade-offs

Works

  • Never needs renaming, even overseas (NLRTM1 for Rotterdam)
  • Anyone in shipping recognises USHOU as Houston
  • Still fits: 12 characters

Doesn't

  • Longer to say: “U-S-H-O-U-one”
  • Pays for overseas offices that may never happen
